What propolis is
Propolis is the resinous material honeybees gather from tree buds and bark, work with wax and enzymes, and use to seal, smooth and defend the hive. It is dense in flavonoids, phenolic acids and aromatic terpenes — which is why it has been prized as an aromatic material since long before perfumery was an industry.
In the hand, raw propolis is brittle when cold and tacky when warm, and no two harvests smell alike. Its character follows the forage: eucalypt, coastal tea tree, orchard blossom.
How the extrait is made
The resin is cleaned, broken and tinctured in perfumer's alcohol, then left to macerate for months. What is drawn off is filtered slowly — a hurried filtration strips the smoke out of it — and set aside to rest again before anything is built on top.
Onto that base the maison composes beeswax absolute, Australian sandalwood, honeyed resins, cold-pressed citrus and floral absolutes. At extrait concentration the proportions are unforgiving: half a gram in the wrong direction turns the accord medicinal. The blend is then aged again in bulk before it is filled, numbered and sealed by hand.
How it wears
The opening is bright and short-lived. Within ten minutes the resin arrives — warm, faintly smoked, more amber than honey — and the sandalwood begins to hold it in place. From there it barely moves for hours, which is the point of extrait.
Because it sits close to the skin, Aurum Propolis is a fragrance of proximity. It is read by the person beside you, not by the room.
